History of Brampton
Prior to European settlement, the area that is now Brampton was inhabited by Indigenous peoples, including the Wendat (Huron), Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), and Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) nations.
In the early 19th century, European settlers began to arrive in the region. The area was initially known as "Buffy's Corners" after a tavern owner named John Buffy opened a tavern at the intersection of Main and Queen Streets.
The name "Brampton" was adopted in 1834, when the community was officially incorporated as a village. It is believed to have been named after the English market town of Brampton in Cumbria, England.
Brampton developed as an agricultural community, with farming and horticulture playing a significant role in its early economy. The arrival of the Grand Trunk Railway in 1856 spurred industrial growth, and Brampton became a center for manufacturing and commerce.
Brampton was incorporated as a town in 1873 and a city in 1974. The city experienced significant population growth and urban development in the latter half of the 20th century.
Brampton is home to several heritage buildings that reflect its historical development. Notable examples include the Alderlea Mansion, built in 1867, and the Dominion Building, constructed in 1887.
