History of Ajax

Before European settlement, Indigenous peoples, including the Iroquois and the Ojibwa inhabited the area that would become Ajax. The region was rich in resources, and the Indigenous communities relied on fishing, hunting, and agriculture.

European settlers arrived in the area in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The town's name, Ajax, was officially adopted in 1941, but the community's history dates back to the 19th century. It was initially part of the Pickering Township.

Ajax played a significant role during World War II. In 1941, the Canadian government acquired a large tract of land to establish Defense Industries Limited (DIL) plant, a munitions manufacturing facility. The plant produced weapons and ammunition for the war effort, and as a result, the town's population increased dramatically as workers moved to the area to support the war production.

The DIL plant was closed after the war, but the town continued to grow steadily. The town's economy diversified, and suburban development began to take shape, attracting more residents and businesses.

Ajax officially became a town on January 1, 1955, after separating from the Township of Pickering. It continued to develop as a suburban community within the Greater Toronto Area.

Ajax has continued to experience significant growth and development over the decades. It has expanded its residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, making it an important part of the Greater Toronto Area's urban sprawl.

Ajax offers various recreational and cultural facilities, including parks, sports complexes, community centers, and libraries. The town also hosts annual events and festivals celebrating its heritage and diversity.
